Featured Community Artist: Chris Rugowski with Chicken or The Egg Photography
Hey folks! Welcome to this month's Artist Spotlight, where we take time to showcase the talented artists within our communities. The Production Farm presents Chris Rugowski of Chicken or The Egg Photography and Age of Fable. Chris (Green Bay Wisconsin) is a multi-faceted photographer, musician, world wanderer, philanthropist and freelance entrepreneur. You can see his photography on Facebook or on his Website, in addition he generously donated the images that adorn our own website. His artistically distinct style is reminiscent of the images that I would tear out of National Geographic when I was a kid.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with him (virtually) and asking him about how he got started and what he hoped others would learn when learning about photography.
"Life is one second at a time, one frame at a time. You often only get one chance, despite the appearance of multiple chances. You only get one chance to get the shot you really want, but you have so many chances to make mistakes. When I was in India, I was riding in a bus a lot, and I had 1 second to get any given shot or poof it was gone. When you’re out watching birds you get one click and they’re off — and fast. When you do concerts, look at the lighting, the environment. In any case, immerse yourself in the environment because that’s how you will capture things like the frog before it hops away".
If you want to learn, then give yourself a time period where you are allowed to make more mistakes. Give yourself space to grow and learn, don’t be mad when it doesn’t work out. No one, not even the pros get the shots they want. There is an old story about how Nat Geo photographers used to bring 10,000 rolls of film with them on any given trek, if you walked away with 1 useable frame out of 24 exposures...you were good.
